What Makes Our Fillets So Special?

Many people believe lake trout from Flathead Lake are among of the best eating trout available anywhere. The fillets are wonderful grilled, baked, or fried and resemble wild salmon in both taste and texture. Our lake whitefish fillets are white and flakey with a mild, delicate flavor. Many people believe lake trout from Flathead Lake are among of the best eating trout available anywhere. Here's why:

Clean Water

Quality fish fillets start with clean water, and Flathead Lake is one of the cleanest large lakes in the world. The lake has a rapid flushing time (about 2.2 years for all the water to be replaced). In contrast, Lake Tahoe's flushing time is about 650 years.

Mysis Shrimp

The introduction of non-native species like lake trout and Mysis shrimp to Flathead Lake has caused major disruptions to the lake ecosystem. But because Mysis shrimp make up a large part of the diet of the lake trout and lake whitefish we sell, our fillets are delicious. The shrimp also give the flesh of lake trout a range of beautiful salmon orange colors.

Mysis Shrimp

The introduction of non-native species like lake trout and Mysis shrimp to Flathead Lake has caused major disruptions to the lake ecosystem, and now threatens native trout. At the same time, there is a silver lining to this ecological calamity: How a fish tastes depends to a large degree on what it eats. Because Mysis shrimp make up a large part of the diet of the lake trout and lake whitefish we sell, our fillets are delicious. The shrimp also give the flesh of lake trout a range of beautiful salmon orange colors. So while the introduction of Mysis shrimp have caused great damage to the lake, they have made lake trout more desireable fare, and that is helping us reduce their numbers.
